CCEW Hosts The Now and The Next Symposium

The Now and the Next SymposiumUniversity of Oklahoma students interested in preparing themselves for the changing global work environment have the opportunity to hear from young entrepreneurs and leaders shaping the future of business during “The Now and The Next Symposium,” scheduled for Friday, Oct. 26, in Oklahoma Memorial Union, 900 Asp Ave.

During five panel discussions led by young CEOs, founders of successful startups and leaders in some of the world’s largest knowledge-based firms, attendees will learn how to leverage their degrees to land jobs, take advantage of an ever-growing e-commerce industry, and how to transform ideas into businesses.

“Tomorrow’s workplace is being shaped by these young entrepreneurs and business leaders,” said Daniel Pullin, university vice president for Strategic Planning and Economic Development. “The University of Oklahoma is providing a rare opportunity for students to hear from, and interact with, such a deep roster of young leaders in one place.”

Symposium guests include:

  • Diego Berdakin
Co-founder and president of BeachMint, a social commerce website that offers spending advice from industry experts and celebrities. He will lead his own seminar, “Disrupting Fashion, Technology and Media.”

  • Jocelyn Grahame
A principal at McKinsey & Co., with more than a decade of experience in advising the world’s largest public and private health care organizations. She is one-half of three dual-career families that will be represented on a panel discussing how to maintain a healthy and rewarding work-life balance.

  • Dustin Rosen
CEO of Pose, a mobile and online platform focused on real-time sharing of fashion and shopping. He will present on panels discussing e-commerce and giving advice to entrepreneurs on transforming ideas into businesses.

Attendees will learn how these young men and women rose to leadership positions in their respective fields.

“Some of these men and women achieved these positions just a couple years after graduating,” Pullin said. “We wanted to demonstrate to our students that, with the right knowledge, work ethic, professional relationships and skills, they can find success in both their career path and life as a whole.”

“These young leaders are ‘The Now,’ and our students are ‘The Next.’ Similarly, OU community members will have the chance to learn ‘Now’ what they can be doing to prepare for what is to come ‘Next,’ in this globally competitive environment,” Pullin added.

Attendees will learn best practices from leaders of management consulting firms including McKinsey & Company and both global and local financial services leaders including Barclays and Oklahoma’s own MidFirst Bank.

The symposium is sponsored by OU’s Center for the Creation of Economic Wealth, OU Institute for the American Constitutional Heritage, OU Center for Entrepreneurship, OU President’s Associates, and Norman Next, Norman’s leading young professionals organization.

Formed in 2006, CCEW connects students with OU researchers and private-sector mentors to advance Oklahoma innovation to grow and diversify Oklahoma’s economy through the nurturing of technology-based enterprises while providing authentic learning experiences to prepare the next generation of business leaders for the state, nation and world.
